The second series of home work exercises is now available on TeleTOP from the Roster and Archive pages. You are allowed to do the home work in pairs. Hand in solutions using the on-line submission system from the TeleTOP Roster. Mention both names, which home work series, and the assignment numbers. The amount of work is roughly equal to the work for the written exam, so you should be able to finish the assignments in about 3 hours (provided that you studied all research papers in advance). Similar questions will be asked at the written exam.
Home work series 2 deadline: 28 March 2008. Read more on TeleTOP.

Welcome to the course XML & Databases 1. Following this course means you will read about some of the latest research on XML databases. We have updated the course considerably this year. We will discuss XML querying with XPath and XQuery, publishing of relational data, a lot about relational storage structures for XML data and query processing techniques, and a number of new courses on full-text querying, distributed querying and querying stand-off data. The study material contains 6 new paper compared to last year’s reader. To obtain the study material necessary for this course, you need to buy the 2008 version of the reader “XML & Databases 1 & 2″.

We decided to change the contents of the upcoming lectures. Some new topics have emerged in research on XML and Databases that we like to tell you about. To make room for that we have to skip and reduce some other topics. This also means that we skip 4 papers from the reader and replace them by 5 other papers which are available electronically in the Archive. I will update the Roster and Archive of TeleTOP today. The final three lectures in the new roster are now organized to fall into one theme: “XML Database Support for Multimedia Applications”. The database support we will look into are information retrieval for XML, XML updating, distributed XML querying, XML stand-off annotations and streaming XML.

Several students told me that the reader is sold out at the Union Shop. This is strange, because we ordered 50 readers in January last year. I notified BOZ about this. Hopefully, the problem will be solved soon. In the mean-time, you can use the PDFs in the Archive. All papers in the reader are electronically available there. We will keep you informed about the developments here on TeleTOP.

Due to personal circumstances, we had to change the order of the lectures. Next lecture will be given by Djoerd Hiemstra on Native XML DBMSs. The lectures on Streaming XML, XML Data Integration, and Document Transformation with XSLT will be given next week and the week after that. The roster on TeleTOP has been changed accordingly.
