. Generally these pages have been made by plain text editing using Xemacs, Kwrite, Note Tab Light, EditPadLite, Notepad, Wordpad, or the like. Nearly all are optimized for windows of size 800x600 [mimimum] or 1024x768 [recommended], or larger, using a reasonably up-to-date Java and JavaScript enabled version of any HTML4 browser. Such as, for instance, Konqueror 4.2.4 (or 3.5.10), epiphany 2.26.1, galeon 2.0.6, IceCat 3.5 and midori 0.1.7 [all Linux browsers] , Safari 4.0.3 and Camino 1.6.8 [two Mac browsers, the first one running on Windows as well] , IE 8 and 6.1 [and the Enigma, Avant, Maxthon, or Flash Peak Slim Browser, four common extensions of the IE engine], Netscape Communicator 4.78 and Navigator 9.0.0.5, K-Meleon 1.5.3, SeaMonkey 1.1.18, Firefox 3.5.2 (or 2.0.0.20 for Win98), Google Chrome 2.0.172.43 and Opera 10. Nowadays I use CSE HTML Validator Lite v9.0221 for instant validation, a great program and free, or Html Validator 0.8.5.8, a superb Firefox extension.
. Two older pages require the Crescendo player 5.1, though other midi browser plugins may work as well. The "align=right" attribute for tables has been temporarily removed in early 2003 for better compatibility with Opera, sometimes at the cost of larger size tables with all column widths specified, to ensure compatibility with Netscape Communicator. [I know, I should have used the "div" tag.] All recent versions of Opera do support this attribute, of course, as well as the "align=bottom" attribute for captions.
. Standard frames will occur on about half of the pages. Netscape Communicator 4.78, from 2001, doesn't support internal frames [iframes], nor does Sun's HotJavabrowser 3.0, from 1996.
. All versions of the required Java Runtime Environment now install smoothly and readily find the appropriate browser plugin folders [jre1.6.0_15 is the most recent and highly recommended version]. Select browser support for IE and the Mozilla browser family in the Java console in your control panel.
. Developers should also try the MIT-INRIA browser-editor, Amaya 11.2 (or 8.54 for Win98), from the W3C site above and the pure text browser Lynx, version 2.8.5 rel.1, or better.
