The Malpaises, once in the year 2000
On Sunday the third of March, a red VW Polo comes to rest on the
small stretch of fertile clay between the Malpais Chico and the Malpais Grande.
Leaving behind the remnants of the black Caldera de la Laguna, it eagerly points its nose towards the Morro de los Alcones, the volcano in the middle, reaching to an altitude
of 433 meters. The ground is still wet in places. There is a small well, a few hundred yards back,
surrounded by little poplars; soon they will bend their heads for the sunshine murmuring about ancient
histories in the ocean breeze.
