Real Time Systems
Contact: Pierre G. Jansen email: jansen@cs.utwente.nl
The research is being undertaken within the Embedded Systems group of the
Computer Science Department,
of the University of Twente.
The goal is to research and develop principles, techniques and contributions
in the field of RT systems ranging from Hard to Soft RT. Typical applications
are within embedded systems, multimedia systems and real-time databases.
The key question is how to realise RT - and/or QoS guarantees as effective
as possible. Such a realisation has to be pecise when needed - for instance
in embedded systems - and flexible when possible - for instance in multi-media
systems. The current and past RT activities contribute or have contributed
to the following projects:
- Pasta A Casimir project in cooperation with NXP Research with the aim to develop techniques for the analysis and synthesis of predictable multi-processor systems.
- Omphale A project in cooperation with NXP Research with the aim to develop techniques for information flows from the background memory to on-tile memory in an Network On Chip context.
- Featherlight a STW funded project on feather-light distributed
mechanisms for networking and distributed collaboration.
- Smart
Surroundings a Bsik project to investigate, define, develop, and demonstrate
the core architectures and frameworks for future ambient systems.
And these projects have become history:
- @HomeAnywhere a NWO
funded project to integrate home appliances into one coherent distributed
architecture in cooperation with Philips Research and supported by the
IBM Equinox program. In @HA a RT home network, the RT-Net, is developed.
- Gecko
a NWO funded project, that adresses fundamental issues in design and architecture
of low power handheld devices. In particular research is done on location
and scheduling of tasks and their intercommunication.
- Tehea
an EU funded project that adresses networked home control applications for
the audio-video world to specify an open, secure global home platform. In
particular work is done on network independent service discovery an securty
mechanisms.
- Eyes a EU project on
energy effecient sensor networks, for which a RT variant will be developed,
- Jukebox, a PhD project of Maria Lijding in which
a RT Multimedia Jukebox is
build.
- Tumult, an almost historical project from the nineties, with Gerard Smit, Hans Scholten , Paul Havinga , and many
others, for the development and construction of a RT multi-processor system
for the Dutch PTT in co-operation with Oce
.
Valorisations
Our RT research has led to the following valorisations:
- Ambient systems, a spin-off of the ES group of the UT, has, in close cooperation, developed a light weight RT kernel AmbientRT according to the principles as developed in ES.
- Recore Systems also a spin-off of the ES group, is developing a light weight RT kernel for their multiprocessor core according to the principles as developed in ES.
- Plan 9 from Bell Labs is extended by Sape Mullender with RT scheduling principles as described in this RT Plan 9 paper.
- RT Linux Free offers an Open Source RT Linux version with our scheduling principles.
-
Clockwork offers tool for feasibility analyses as currently used by master students of RT Systems-1 and -2. Here you can find a description.
