Feedback on Visual Attention to Enhance Social Dynamics in Small Group Meetings (Jan-Sep, 2005)

The objective of the project was to design and evaluate a service providing feedback about visual attention to participants in a group meeting through a visual representation, applying a user-centred design approach.

The goal of the feedback visualization service is to make people aware of the current meeting flow, and in this way influence the group’s social dynamics. Visual attention, as signified by eye gaze, is an important nonverbal signal in the regulation of the conversation dynamics. As the gaze patterns are closely linked with the speech behaviour, an integrated visualization concept was designed and evaluated jointly with Jimmy Wang.

A focus group was arranged to get insight into social dynamics problems groups encounter during meetings. Two evaluation rounds were conducted. The first evaluation was conducted to validate the visualization concept and to gain insight into the actual use of the provided feedback. During the second evaluation 11 groups of 4 participants had two discussions with and without visualization.

The results show that the feedback service had a positive influence on the group process and participation. Users suggested that the service could be useful for training meeting skills rather than during real meetings.

The project was supervised by Dr. Jacques Terken (Technical University Eindhoven) and carried out for the Department of Industrial Design (TU/e), as part of the EU-funded CHIL project.
