Standardisation and Collaboration

ESPRIT 2589 - SAM Multilingual Speech Input/Output: Assessment, Methodology and Standardisation - to develop methodologies, tools and databases for the assessment of speech synthesis and recognition systems in applications where multilingual performance is required from the same basic equipment.

LDC Linguistic Data Consortium - is an open consortium of universities, companies and government research laboratories. It creates, collects and distributes speech and text databases, lexicons, and other resources for research and development purposes.

ELRA European Language Resources Association - to provide a centralized organization for the validation, management, and distribution of speech, text, and terminology resources and tools, and to promote their use within the European telematics R&TD community.

ELSNET (European Network in Language and Speech) - seeks to encourage the development of language technology in Europe, by helping coordinate progress on both the scientific and technological fronts.

EAGLES (Expert Advisory Group on Language Engineering Standards) - The goal of the EAGLES SLWG is to produce and maintain a ``Handbook of Standards and Resources for Spoken Language Systems'' based on experience in European projects.

Dialogue systems, multimodal systems

TRAINS - The goal is a fully integrated system involving online spoken and typed natural language together with graphical displays and GUI-based interaction. The primary application has been a planning and scheduling domain involving a railroad freight system, where the human manager and the system must cooperate to develop and execute plans.

SUNDIAL (Speech UNderstanding in DIALogue) - The goal of the project was to build real-time integrated dialogue systems capable of maintaining co-operative dialogues with users over standard telephone lines.

LIMSI-CNRS TLP (The LIMSI Spoken Language Processing Group) - focuses its research activities on the analysis and modelisation of spoken language, and on the development of speech synthesis and recognition algorithms. The results of this research are integrated in systems for text-to-speech synthesis, speech-to-text transcription, spoken language understanding, and speaker and language identification. Three supporting activities complement our research: realisation of corpora, evaluation of models and systems, and technology transfer.

ITRI (Information Technology Research Institute) - The Institute's research programme is based around focus areas of expertise, providing the underlying research context for specific projects. Our current focus areas are: computational linguistics and language engineering; computer supported collaborative design; multimedia and multimodal interfaces.
