Glimpses of San Francisco, January 2004

I attended the MDM 2004 (Mobile Data Management) conference at the Double Tree Hotel, Berkeley Marina from 18th to 24th January 2004. It was my first trip to the States and I was told by many prior to my trip that I was about to visit one of the most beautiful cities there. And yes - with the charm of the old-world mechanical cable cars climbing up and down the hilly streets residing alongside the hustle and bustle of the financial district around the towering Transamerica, there's no doubt that San Francisco is a beautiful city with a distinct character. But while I did love the stroll down the crookedest street and the mouth watering clam chowder at Pier 39, personally I felt that the true beauty of SF can only be experienced when you're on the shores of what was once the home of the greatest crooks of all time - Alcatraz! Oh yes, it was bed and breakfast with one heck of a view!! Whether you want to admire the majestic Golden Gate or Bay Bridge against the backdrop of the fiery colours of the sunset, or the glittering skyline of SF under a starlit night sky, Alcatraz offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the city. Here you'll find some snapshots taken during my week-long stay most of which were taken on the last day when I had some time to explore. All photos were taken using my beloved Canon EOS 300D (or the Rebel as it's known in the States)!! The close-ups were taken using a Canon 75-300mm lens. The photos here don't really reflect the true quality of the camera as I've had to compress them further for the web. Do email me if you want to have the originals. Enjoy!!

Dinner at a Chinese restarant at Berkeley with some of the folks attending the conference.

In the foreground - that's the adventurous Dipanjan - the guy who ordered the most life threatening dish - fried jellyfish! Even the waiter asked, "Do you know what your'e ordering??!!".

After chatting with Vinod for a while on the first day I got to know that he used to live just next door to me when we were kids!! Amazing! What a small world!

There was a crooked man and he walked a crooked mile,

He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile....
