TIOS ACCOUNTS
Updated: November 1 1995 by A. Roelofs

The following information is here available about:

Available TIOS accounts

Student accounts on INFnet

Under particular circumstances, students can obtain a personal INFnet account in stead of their EDUnet account. This happens when for instance a student has to do an assignment or other activities for TIOS. These accounts do not have any printing rights. To get these rights you have to apply for a printing budget.
The maximum disk-space of this account is 15Mb.

Accounts for students, working on their master assignment

These students do automatically get an account on INFnet. From the moment they are registered as a student, working on their master assignment, they obtain a printing budget of 500 pages for their report and the maximum disk-space is 15Mb.

Ph.D accounts

In principle Ph.D accounts (on INFnet) do not have any limitations concerning disk-space and printing. Obviously the available disk-space is always limited, but no rules are written down. As far as the printing is concerned, TIOS pays for the prints and TIOS also obtains a monthly specified overview of its printer use, per printer and per user!

Fellow worker accounts

Like Ph.D accounts these accounts (on INFnet) have no limitations concerning disk-space and printing. Obviously the available disk-space is always limited, but no rules are written down. As far as the printing is concerned, TIOS pays for the prints and TIOS also obtains a monthly specified overview of its printer use, per printer and per user!

Multi-user accounts

Multi-user accounts are avoided as much as possible, but sometimes they are neseccary. Multi-user accounts do not have printing rights, but it is possible to apply for them from Eric van Hengstrum (in case of Unix accounts) or Joop Siebum (for PC accounts).

Text-editing accounts (for students)

Every student of Computer Science Department has the right to have a text-editing account on INFnet. This doesn't imply it is created automatically. It has to be applied for at the B&O helpdesk, before 10.00 am. This account is necessary in the following cases:
  • Editing of text and printing in a NOVELL environment.
  • Creating of a printing budget in the INFnet environment.

Personal account drive
Nowadays it is also possible to mount your personal account directory on a network drive under the text-editing accounts. This is possible in two ways:
  1. Straight away after logging in.
Here you get the question whether you want to mount your e: drive.
  2. Later on, having left Windows.
    With the commando:
    nfslogin [username]
    you can mount drive e:.

Global Document Directory

The icon `Set Global Document Directory' establishes the document directory and if in use, the ini-file directory for all text editors, namely:
  • Word for Windows 2.0c
  • Word for Windows 6.0a
  • Word 5.0 (dos)
  • word 5.5 (dos
  • WordPerfect 5.1 (dos)

From dos you can also execute the command j:\setdrive [directory]. The default directory is c:\tekst.win (the Windows startup directory).

Note: Establishing of the directory has to happen before starting a text editing package.

How to obtain an account

An INFnet account can be requested by every employee of TIOS. For a workstation account you have to fill in this FORM. For a PC-Novell account you have to contact J. Siebum.
For this a transfer of EDUnet to INFnet or a new account is performed. A new account is created only if the concerning person doesn't have an EDUnet or INFnet account.

Expiry date of accounts

Each account has an expiry date, so after this date it is not possible to log in anymore on that account. The account is then put on non-active and after half a year it will be removed. An expiry mechanism takes care of this.
Before the account is put on non-active, the people are warned automatically by this mechanism via email. To prevent that the account will be non-active, they have to mail to helpdesk. If you want to know the expire date of your account, you can mail to helpdesk.
The expiry mechanism works automatically to prevent breakin attempts on accounts, which are not in use for a long time.

Change of password

It is possible to change the password of your account. For this you may use the command, yppasswd or passwd.
What command depends on which machines your account is avaliable. For the workstations and the PC-NFS you have to use the command, yppasswd, and for the PC-Novell you use the command, passwd.
