BACKUP AND (RE-)STORE
Updated: November 1 1995 by A. Roelofs

The following information is available here:

These services are provided by the Management and Maintenance Group of the Computer Science Department (B&O).

BACKUP AND RESTORE FACILITIES

Backups

On workdays a backup is being made of everything, what is presented on the file servers, like user-software, home directories and mailboxes. The backup starts somewhere between 8.00 pm and 8.00 am.

The backup tapes are stored for some time. How long depends on the kind of tape:

Restore

It is possible to apply for a restore of files. To get a restore of a file, the file has to be on the file server for at least one night.
The request of restore can be made by sending a E-mail to helpdesk. Specify both date and full pathname of the files.
The concerning files will be placed in your home directory with the name: backup.date. You'll receive an email, when the restore has been completed succesfully.

PC backup service

For PC's, running MS-Windows, a backup service is available via the net. The service involves a private directory on the backup server and it is only available on request.
The performance of this service is a few times slower than the performance of the backups of the home directories. Further more the space is limited on the backup server. To prevent improper use, only archives are permitted. Other files will be removed and can end in locking up the service.
The space is only available between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm.

The service is regulated as follows:

STORE FACILITY FOR DATA, HARDLY USED

Archives

Besides the space for home directories and software on file servers, B&O also offers disk space for data, which has to be stored for a long time and is hardly used. This data should not be stored in home directories, but on the disks of the archive server. It is not stored on tapes, because data, which is stored on tapes for a few years, might not be restored properly.
The archive server is very slow and antique, so the disk space is absolutely not suitable for using it as an extra home directory space. The files on these disks are also backuped on tapes. In this way it is garuanteed this material is preserved. Namely if a disk get damaged, this disk will be replaced by an old disk and the data will be restored from tape.
You can apply for write-access to the archives by sending an email to helpdesk. In archives a directory is then made with your username. In this directory you can place everything. The space can be found under the path: /Archive/TIOS/<username>.
