Selection of printer

There are two methods to select a printer:

The available printers for TIOS and their names are given above

Several queues

The printer, lw23, described above has several queues for a variety of possibilities. To view the status of the queued jobs, people have to give the queue, to which the file is sent. It can happen that the following message is shown: `waiting for lock on /var/spool/lw23/devnull' in the output of lpq/lpstat. This means that at the moment the queue, which is asked, is waiting for its turn.

The queues and their functions:

The last two queues cause that the reverse side of the paper to be printed upsidedown, but for this the landscape option also has to be given. This is to enable binding of landscape-prints.

Printing Budgets

In the past the outlays concerning the laser-printing grew too much. Nowadays the printing is registered and charged to the working group to keep the costs down. This means that the working groups receive a budget for laser-printing. If they have more costs then the budget allows, they have to pay it by own means. The printing done by students, who are working on their final project, are financed centrally by the CS-department Also the counsel has introduced some rules concerning the printing from students and multi-user accounts:

For students there are two possibilities to obtain or raise the budget of their account:
  1. Students can apply for a budget or budget raise from their supervisor. For raising it is possible that a student has to pay it himself/herself. If the supervisor approves, then this form has to be filled in.
  2. It is possible to transfer budget of a word processing account to an INF(CS)-net account. For this you have to contact the helpdesk. In the near future, this method will be automated.
Multi-user accounts can also get a budget, if TIOS wants to pay for the costs. For this the following form has to be filled in.

Economical with printing budget

There are a few methods to be economical with your budget:

If anybody has more suggestions for being economical, please send them to the helpdesk.

Your Printing Overview

It is possible to obtain an report of your printing budget with the commands:

Both cammands can only be used on HP and SUN systems. The use of xpa, a graphical variation of PA_show, is very clear.
If you use the command PA_show (without arguments) you get the number of prints you have leftover if you have a budget, otherwise you get the message: Account unknow in Printer DataBase on Homerus.
The command, PA_show -l, gives a list of all registrated print-jobs.
Beside this it is possible to give a printer-name with the command PA_show -l. Then only jobs of the concerning printer are shown. However this option can only be applied to the printers of the name: lw..
Below the commands are shown in an example:
hello@countach:1> PA_show

(or if you don't have a printing budget:
Account unknown in Printer DataBase on homerus)
