General information

Workstation is a general term for computers which are connected to networks. These are powerful enough for large scale scientific engineering, financial and commercial applications. Typically the workstations employ a Unix operating system. Other terms for workstation are 'node' and 'client'. Client assumes client/server computing, which TIOS applies. Client/server is a network concept, implying that clients can request services from other computers, the servers.
TIOS has Unix workstations, which are SPARC stations. These contain SPARC processors developed by SUN and on these stations a Unix based operating system, Location

The stations for general use are located at floors 5 and 4 in the laboratories of TIOS with the room numbers 5070, 5082 and 4042. The laboratories are open from 8.30 till 17.30. If you want to work longer, you have to obtain a pass from the porter downstairs.
To work on these machines you must have an account, of course.

Hardware platform

For a normal SPARC station nowadays we install 32 MB memory per CPU and new systems have 500MB or 1GB disk-space. This disk-space is primairily meant for the performance of the system. This means, that beside the space for operating system (OS), a part is also reserved for CacheFS facilities and local resources, which can be filled in by users.
