General information

An operating system is a group of instructions. The computer uses these instructions to communicate with users and devices, to store and read data, and to execute programs. In fact an operating system tells the computer what to do.
On the TIOS workstations the Unix based operating system Solaris runs. There are two versions of Solaris, Solaris 1.x (=SunOS 4.1.x) and Solaris 2.x (which includes SunOS 5.x, Open Network Computing, Open Windows and more). The latter is the latest version, which is more compatible with the rest of the Unix industry than Solaris 1.x. Beside that much of SUN's software is only available for Solaris 2.x. So, many systems are upgraded to Solaris 2.x.

Upgrading to Solaris 2.x

Some TIOS stations do still run Solaris 1.x and others are already upgraded to Solaris 2.x. Of the stations running Solaris 1.x the following systems will be upgraded by B&O to Solaris 2.x :

If you want your system to run Solaris 2.x and your system is not on the preceding list, let us know. Before B&O will upgrade your system, they will first contact you to find out if an upgrade is possible.

More information is available about Solaris 2.x and upgrading.
