My research is directed toward knowledge-based applications that, in one way or another, support finding and exchange of (mainly scientific) information. I am involved in the development of ontologies, in information retrieval research, and in research on man-machine interaction in the realm of scientific information. Currently, most of my time is devoted to the BioRange programme (see the NBIC website), subproject 4.2.1: User interfaces for scientific collaboration. I am a committee member of the Dutch-speaking society for Information Science, Vereniging Werkgemeenschap Informatiewetenschap.
I have participated in the ESF Programme on Integrated Approaches for Functional Genomics, which was operative until 2005. I have been involved as co-organiser in four workshops:
