RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS

The following list of topics briefly summarizes the main research activities, carried out or conducted by Prof. dr. W.H.M. Zijm in the last five years.

a. Design, planning and control of discrete manufacturing systems

Research in this theme is devoted to the development of quantitative tools supporting the design of manufacturing systems (layout, selection of machines and auxiliary resources, transport modes and control systems), aiming at an optimal performance in terms of lead times, quality and costs. In addition, planning and control systems are developed (long term production planning, capacity planning and materials co-ordination, shop floor control). To this end, specific (hierarchical and multi-resource) stochastic network models are developed  for performance analysis, while combinatorial methods are developed and used in short term optimal control. An advanced multi-resource capacity planning and shop floor control system (JobPlanner) has been developed, based on experiences with a number of metal working companies (El-O-Matic, DAF PKF, Stork Plastics Machinery, Urenco).

b. Supply Chain Management
Within this theme, attention is paid to the development of management strategies for supply chains (multi-echelon systems), in order to arrive at a high throughput, short response times and a high qaulity of products, processes and services. Both the design of the structure of the logistic chain and the development of appropriate control systems are discussed. In particular, we focus on the control of networks under capacity constraints, inventory management within service networks and the interaction between inventory management and supply strategies. An important role concerns the modelling of modern ICT technologies (Electronic Data Interchange, Web-based design, Electronic Commerce) and their use in optimising the supply chain. An active collaboration exists with researchers in the U.S. and France, on the development of chains of semi-open queueing networks that are particularly useful in modelling high performance supply chains.

c. Design, planning and control of material handling systems
Part of the research in material handling systems concerns the development of optimal strategies for storage and orderpicking in both manual and automated storage and retrieval systems. Topics that are studied include: layout design of warehouses, the selection of storage and routing policies and the performance analysis and scheduling of smaller storage equipment such as carousels and paternosters. Joint research is performed with various engineering companies and end-users, as well as with foreign research groups (Material Handling Research Center of Georgia Institute of Technology, Fraunhofer Institut für Materialflu? und Logistik). Finally, attention is paid to the design and logistic control of internal transport systems, with some special interest in automated guided vehicle systems. Models used include probabilistic project network models, queueing models, as well as specific models from combinatorial optimization

d. Project planning and maintenance management
This topic is concerned with the production management (order acceptance, process planning, capacity and materials planning, and execution) of large, complex organisations with a mixed job shop and project-based operation, with currently a special emphasis on ship repair companies. A close co-operation exists with the Royal Netherlands Navy, In this study, we concentrate on the development of a completely new production management system. Both organisational, design and planning and control issues are investigated. In particular, the integration of IT systems for automatic design and process planning, with modern planning and control systems is studied. Various decision support systems have been developed. With respect to models, we mention a probabilistic project network approach, and integer programming models based on column generation and Lagrange relaxation.
